SENATE RESOLUTION NO. 30

Congratulating Opal Morse on her selection as the 1999 West Virginia Teacher of the Year.

Whereas, Opal Morse, a life-long resident of Mason County, West Virginia, has been an educator for more than thirty years. She currently teaches science and speech at Point Pleasant High School; and
Whereas, Opal Morse is an outstanding representative of West Virginia's teaching profession. Her motto, which she has used in every class, is called "The Morse Code" and states, "Make the world a better place because you have lived in it and made a difference"; and
Whereas, The teaching ability of Opal Morse, especially her insistence on academic discipline, has made her the envy of her colleagues; and
Whereas, Her personal attention to each student as she strives to instill the academic discipline necessary to achieving a good education is her greatest achievement; and
Whereas, Aside from her outstanding accomplishments as an educator, Opal Morse has been involved in numerous workshops throughout the state and has addressed such matters as communication skills, peer mediation, scientific literacy and the tech-prep program; and
Whereas, Outside the classroom, Opal Morse is actively involved in local theater programs and has offered drama workshops to 4-H students and others in summer programs; and
Whereas, In 1999, Opal Morse was named the "West Virginia Teacher of the Year", a tribute befitting a teacher with such attention to the personal educational needs of each of her students. Her demand for academic discipline from each of her students has led her students to set goals for themselves and to strive to reach those goals; therefore, be it
Resolved by the Senate:
That the Senate hereby congratulates Opal Morse on her selection as the 1999 "West Virginia Teacher of the Year"; and, be it
Further Resolved, That if the high teaching standards set by Opal Morse for herself and the academic discipline she requires of her students would be emulated by other educators, West Virginia's educational system would be a model for the nation; and, be it
Further Resolved, That the Clerk is hereby directed to forward a copy of this resolution to Opal Morse, 1999 "West Virginia Teacher of the Year".
